This paper presents TrES, a new public source code designed to simulate the evolution of hierarchical triple star systems. TrES combines three-body dynamics and stellar evolution, considering factors like mass transfer, stellar winds, supernova explosions, and the Lidov-Kozai mechanism. The code accounts for various timescales, including dynamical, thermal, and nuclear, and uses a secular approach to model orbital evolution, with modifications for events like supernovae. Examples are provided illustrating the code’s application to real triple systems, showcasing its capability to simulate complex evolutionary pathways. The authors also discuss limitations of the secular approach, particularly for less hierarchical systems.
